Philips Square at 240 Tache Avenue in St. Boniface is comprised of six private apartments on the main and garden levels of the former St. Philips Anglican Church and Memorial Hall. The Gothic-revival inspired church facing Coronation Park, has stood on this site since 1904. It was designed by Darling and Pearson Architects of Toronto, and constructed by the Rat Portage Lumber Company. The modernist Memorial Hall, adjacent the church, was designed by Pratt and Lindgren Architects of Winnipeg, and built in 1959. With a declining congregation, the church was closed and deconsecrated during the pandemic, and offered for sale. Without any heritage designation to protect the structures from demolition, the current owners purchased the property with the goal to save, restore, and convert the buildings into six residences.
For this historic adaptive reuse project, the footprint and facades of the historic church and hall have been preserved, including the original stained glass windows, interior woodwork and finishing, and the red brick and tyndalstone facade and foundation. It was the owners’ intention to maintain and restore the existing facades and footprint of the church and hall. The restoration projection included the repointing and repair of the exterior brick and stone facade and foundation, and the revitalization of the gardens. The buildings are bordered on three sides by lawn and gardens, including several century-old oak and elm trees, mature maple, pear, and spruce trees, a cotoneaster perimeter hedge, and boulevard lily beds.
Philips Square was awarded the 2024 Heritage Winnipeg Preservation Award for Excellence.
