108 Alexander Avenue

The Dominion Express Building (1904) was designed by John Woodman whose other notable architectural works include Eaton’s Warehouse (’04) and the Grace Hospital (’05). There had been a number of large fires in downtown in the early 1900’s and as a result the architect of this building was tasked with making the building fire-proof, therefore the Dominion Express Building was constructed of brick walls and steel I-beams encased in concrete. The wagons were stored on the main floor and the horses were stabled on the second floor, climbing a concrete ramp to get to the second floor.
