St. John’s is the oldest Anglican parish west of the Great Lakes and inextricably bound to the history of Winnipeg and Manitoba. Records indicate the first burial in the cemetery was of Hector McLean, a Selkirk Settler, who passed away in August 1813. The first church building was erected in 1822. The present Cathedral was built in 1926. Designed by Parfitt and Prain of Winnipeg, it incorporates elements of various mediaeval English design, with a Norman tower and barrel-vaulted ceiling, and Gothic arched doors and windows. Two of the stonemasons, both in their eighties, who worked on the present Cathedral had also worked on the 1862 building. A second storey on the north west corner was added in 1959.
